About This Tour

Margaret Bridge, the real Danube crossing this tour takes, was designed by French engineer Ernest Goüin and built between 1872 and 1876, opening on April 30, 1876. Its distinctive bent shape — the two halves meet at a 165-degree angle near Margaret Island — isn't an aesthetic flourish; it's a deliberate engineering response to the Danube's current hitting the bridge's piers at an angle on either side of the island. The spur actually connecting the bridge to the island itself was only added later, in 1899–1900.
Hungary's wine tradition has a genuinely serious pedigree behind it. The Tokaj region began classifying its vineyards by quality as early as 1730, and a royal decree in the 1730s formally delimited the Tokaj area — making it one of the world's very first protected wine appellations, predating Bordeaux's famous 1855 classification by well over a century. The wine and cheese tasting at the end of this route sits on top of that same long tradition, even if the specific wines poured will vary by season and supplier.
Ending a tuk-tuk ride with a genuine tasting, rather than just another photo stop, is a deliberately different kind of finish — a real reason to linger instead of moving straight on to the next landmark.
