Budapest's illuminated skyline has a real, datable start. In May 1936, Budapest's mayor directed the city's Electricity Works to experiment with lighting the Chain Bridge, and by March 1937 officials had settled on a festoon of lamps tracing the bridge's arc — about 2.5 kilometers of lights in total. That same year, the effort expanded into a coordinated lighting scheme covering the Chain Bridge, Matthias Church, the Parliament Building, and the Royal Castle together, which is genuinely the origin of the illuminated-landmarks look this tour is built around.
The Chain Bridge's own lighting was actually reprogrammed in 2023 to resemble that original 1937 design, as part of Budapest's 150th anniversary of unification, and it's occasionally lit in the Hungarian tricolor for special occasions — a real, still-evolving tradition rather than a fixed, decades-old display.
Seeing Parliament and Buda Castle lit up after dark genuinely changes how they read compared to a daytime visit — the Neo-Gothic detail on Parliament in particular is far easier to pick out against a dark sky than against daylight glare.
