The city tour side of this day covers ground across both halves of a genuinely two-sided city — Buda and Pest, together with Óbuda, were separate towns until they formally merged into one Budapest on 17 November 1873. The idea of joining them, and the name itself, is credited to the 19th-century statesman István Széchenyi — the same man the day's thermal spa is named after, a real thread connecting the morning's sightseeing to the afternoon's soak rather than a coincidence of scheduling.
Széchenyi itself opened on 16 June 1913, designed by Győző Czigler in a grand Neo-Baroque style, and drew over 200,000 bathers in its very first year. Its thermal water comes from two real springs, drilled almost a kilometer underground between 1865 and 1875 and running at 74°C and 77°C before being cooled for bathing — genuine 19th-century engineering behind what looks like a simple soak.
The bath's real local culture is as much a part of the visit as the water itself. The sight of regulars playing chess on floating boards in the steaming outdoor pool is a long-running Budapest tradition, not a staged photo opportunity, and visitors are sometimes genuinely invited to join a game. After a morning of city sightseeing, this is where the tour's full seven hours earns its keep — real time to sit in the water, not just see it from outside.
