The Castle District stop centers on Matthias Church, whose current neo-Gothic form only dates to a major 1873-1896 restoration by architect Frigyes Schulek — the building underneath is centuries older. It served as the coronation church for Hungarian kings, but for more than 150 years under Ottoman rule it actually functioned as a mosque, a real double life most visitors to the Castle District never hear about. Fisherman's Bastion, built just behind it in the same restoration spirit, was deliberately designed to complement the church's silhouette rather than stand on its own.
From the castle hill, the route crosses to the Hungarian Parliament Building, a working seat of government on a scale that's hard to grasp from outside — 691 rooms, 28 entrances, and 10 courtyards, built between 1885 and 1904 to Imre Steindl's neo-Gothic design. It sits on Kossuth Square directly on the Danube's eastern bank, sited specifically so its riverfront silhouette would announce the building before visitors ever reached its doors.
St. Stephen's Basilica, named for Hungary's first king and its only canonized monarch, wasn't finished in one straightforward build — an 1868 dome collapse forced much of the structure to be rebuilt, pushing its consecration to 1905, more than fifty years after construction began in 1851. Its Neo-Classical style and 96-meter height were both deliberate, matched almost exactly to the Parliament Building so neither church nor state would visually outrank the other.
The genuinely different part of this tour is its own ending: a real choice between Lukács Thermal Bath, whose healing waters trace back to the Knights of St. John in the Middle Ages and were later a favorite soak of the Ottoman Grand Vizier Pasha Mustafa, or the Central Market Hall, opened in 1897 under architect Samu Pecz with its distinctive Zsolnay-tiled roof — a working market, not a tourist food court, rebuilt after real wartime damage and a full 1991 restoration. Which one your group picks genuinely changes the character of the day.
