About This Tour
A private tuk-tuk tour for your group only, real stops along the Danube riverfront, Buda Castle Quarter, and Margaret Island. This is a private tuk-tuk tour for your group only. Real stops include the Danube riverfront, Buda Castle Quarter, Margaret Island, Tabán, and Gellért Hill.
Margaret Island's name comes from a real act of royal devotion. King Béla IV vowed, during the devastating Mongol invasion of 1241–42, to dedicate a daughter to religious life if Hungary survived; when it did, he sent his 11-year-old daughter Margaret to a Dominican convent on the island. It had carried several earlier names — including the Isle of Rabbits — before hers stuck for good. Today it's a genuinely car-free park island in the middle of the Danube, which is exactly what makes it such a quiet, romantic stretch of the route.
Tabán, down at the foot of Gellért Hill, has a more bittersweet real history. Resettled with around 600 Serbian families after the 1686 siege of Buda, it grew into a lively, Mediterranean-feeling bohemian quarter of restaurants and narrow hillside streets by the 19th century — then its roughly 3,700 residents were evicted in 1933 and the entire neighborhood was demolished, replaced with the open parkland that's there now.
Gellért Hill itself closes the loop with the Buda Castle Quarter, its Liberty Statue visible from much of the riverfront — a genuinely striking backdrop for a sunset ride, regardless of which version of its own founding legend you prefer.
