Budapest itself is a relatively young creation, which is a real, useful thing to know before a personalized day exploring it. Buda, Pest, and Óbuda were three separate towns until a law passed in late 1872 formally merged them into one city in 1873. By 1890 the unified Budapest had grown to roughly 492,000 people, becoming the Austro-Hungarian Empire's second city after Vienna — and the contrast that merger created, hilly, castle-topped Buda on one bank facing flat, grid-planned Pest on the other, is still obvious on the ground today.
