About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, with a real 5-star licensed guide, real skip-the-line Matthias Church and Buda Castle gardens. This is a private tour for your group only, with a genuine 5-star licensed guide. Real stops include skip-the-line Matthias Church, Buda Castle gardens, and Fisherman's Bastion.
Matthias Church sits at the heart of the Castle District, and by tradition the first church on this spot dates back to 1015, though the Gothic building you see today took shape mainly in the second half of the 14th century. It takes its popular name from King Matthias Corvinus, who was married here twice during his reign, though its formal dedication is to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Its single most important moment came in 1867, when it hosted the coronation of Franz Joseph I as King of Hungary alongside his wife, Empress Elisabeth — known to Hungarians as Sisi — with composer Franz Liszt writing and personally performing a Coronation Mass for the occasion. That same coronation prompted architect Frigyes Schulek's major restoration of the church, the work that gave it much of its present appearance and that also led directly to the construction of the neighboring Fisherman's Bastion.
With a licensed guide handling skip-the-line entry, there's no need to queue for any of this — just time inside the church itself, in Buda Castle's gardens, and on the terrace outside to take in why this one square became the ceremonial heart of the Hungarian monarchy.
