About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, real ferry crossing, the genuine Benedictine Tihany Abbey, and a real Balatonfüred wine tasting. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include a ferry crossing from Szántod, the genuine Benedictine Tihany Abbey, the Tagore Promenade, and a real Balatonfüred wine tasting.

Lake Balaton is routinely called the 'Hungarian Sea,' and for good reason — it's the largest lake in Central Europe, with a shoreline long enough that the ferry crossing from Szántod to Tihany genuinely feels like a small voyage rather than a quick hop.

Tihany Abbey, perched above that crossing, has a history that stretches back to 1055, when King Andrew I founded the Benedictine monastery and dedicated it to the Virgin Mary and to Aignan of Orléans. Its original founding charter is still preserved at Pannonhalma Archabbey and holds a genuinely remarkable distinction: it contains the oldest surviving words written in the Hungarian language. The church visible today was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1754, and the abbey remains active, with arguably the best panoramic view of the whole lake from its hilltop.

A walk along the Tagore Promenade and a real Balatonfüred wine tasting round out the day, giving you the lake's natural scale, its oldest standing institution, and its wine country all within one private outing.
