The Herend porcelain manufactory traces back to 1826, when it began as a modest earthenware works near the town of Herend, close to Veszprém. After founder Vince Stingl went bankrupt, his creditor Mór Fischer took over in 1839 and pivoted the factory toward fine artistic porcelain. Within decades, Herend had become supplier to the Habsburg court, Queen Victoria, the Tsars, and much of European aristocracy — in 1865, Emperor Franz Joseph made it the official purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Court, replacing Vienna's own manufactory. Several of its best-known patterns are still named for those original royal clients: Victoria, Esterházy, Rothschild, and Apponyi among them.
Lake Balaton, the day's second stop, is genuinely the largest lake in Central Europe — about 598 square kilometers, stretching roughly 77 kilometers along the foothills of the Bakony Mountains. It's also unusually shallow, averaging only around 3.2 meters deep, which is part of why its water warms quickly and why the lake has drawn Hungarian holidaymakers to its shores for generations. The Zala River feeds it and the canalized Sió River is its only outflow; together they replenish the entire lake roughly every two years. It remains one of the region's most visited natural destinations, framed by vineyard-covered hills along its northern shore.
The two stops sit in roughly opposite directions from Budapest, so combining them into one private day makes practical sense — Herend's workshop visit offers a close, hands-on look at a centuries-old craft still practiced largely by hand, while the lake itself offers open water, vineyard-covered hillsides, and a different pace entirely for the rest of the day.
