About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, real stops at Hortobágy National Park, a genuine Hungarian cowboy (csikós) horse show, and Debrecen. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include Hortobágy National Park, a genuine csikós (Hungarian cowboy) horse show, the Herdsmen Museum, and a Debrecen walking tour.
Hortobágy became Hungary's very first national park in 1973, and it remains the country's largest protected area — an 800-square-kilometer stretch of treeless steppe, or puszta, that is also the largest semi-natural grassland left anywhere in Europe. The landscape itself is a product of the Tisza River shifting its course roughly 10,000 years ago, leaving behind the flat, alkaline plain where Hungarian grey cattle, Racka sheep, and the csikós herdsmen's horses still graze much as they have for generations. UNESCO added Hortobágy to its World Heritage List in 1999, recognizing it as a rare example of traditional land use surviving largely intact.
Debrecen, where the day continues, is Hungary's second-largest city and has twice served, briefly, as the country's actual capital — once in 1849, when the revolutionary government fled here and Lajos Kossuth declared Habsburg rule over Hungary at an end, and again at the close of World War II in 1944–45. Its long Protestant tradition earned it the nickname "the Calvinist Rome," embodied today by the Great Reformed Church, one of the largest Protestant churches anywhere in Hungary and still the city's defining landmark.
