Hollókő earned its UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1987 as an exceptionally well-preserved example of rural Palóc life before the modern agricultural revolution reshaped the Hungarian countryside. The village itself, in Nógrád county roughly 90 kilometers northeast of Budapest in the Cserhát Mountains, has roots going back to the 13th century, though most of what you walk through today took shape during the 18th and 19th centuries — whitewashed, half-timbered houses lining the main street, with newer generations of families having built their homes behind the older ones over time.
Eger, the second stop on this day, brings a very different kind of heritage: its Basilica, Archiepiscopal Palace, and Lyceum library sit at the center of a town shaped as much by Habsburg-era architecture and faith as by the medieval castle on its hill.
Finishing with a wine tasting in the Valley of the Beautiful Women ties the day together — a UNESCO village in the morning and a genuine regional wine tradition by the afternoon — and keeping the group to between one and seven people on this private tour means there's time to actually take both places in rather than rush between them.
