Visegrád's royal palace, which you'll see as ruins today, reached its peak under King Matthias Corvinus, who had it rebuilt between 1477 and 1484 in late Gothic style with Italian Renaissance decoration — the first time that Renaissance style appeared anywhere in Europe outside Italy itself. Contemporary accounts describe a palace of roughly 350 rooms with marble fountains, exotic gardens, and a library said to rival the Vatican's in size. The Ottoman siege of 1544 ended all of that, and by the 18th century the ruins had disappeared under earth entirely; excavation only began in 1934 and continues today.
Szentendre, your other stop, has an entirely different history: a town resettled by Serbian, Dalmatian, and Greek refugees in 1690, later rediscovered by Hungarian painters who founded a lasting artists' colony there in 1926.
What sets this particular day apart is the lunch itself — a genuinely exclusive sitting at a traditional wine cellar, with a sommelier guiding you through real Hungarian wines course by course, rather than a quick tasting squeezed in between stops. After a morning spent among medieval ruins and artist studios, that slower, seated meal is really the centerpiece of the day.
