Frequently Asked Questions

A real, genuine scenic stretch of the river north of Budapest.
Szentendre was originally settled by Serbian, Dalmatian, and Greek refugees starting in 1690, which gave the town its distinctly southern, Mediterranean character. In 1926, Hungarian painters founded a formal artists' colony there, drawn by the same light and affordable rents, and that creative community has continued into the present day.

About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, real stops at Szentendre and Visegrád Castle along the genuine Danube Bend. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include the genuine artists' town of Szentendre and Visegrád Castle, along the scenic Danube Bend.

Szentendre's distinctly Mediterranean look comes from history, not accident. Serbian, Dalmatian, and Greek settlers arrived here in 1690, led by Patriarch Arzenije Černojević III, after fleeing Ottoman territory further south, and by the 18th century the town's Serbian community had grown to around 6,000 people with eight Orthodox churches of their own. Most of that community eventually returned to the Balkans once the region was freed from Ottoman rule in the early 20th century — but by then, Hungarian painters had already discovered the town's light and cheap rents, founding a proper artists' colony in 1926 that's still active today.

Visegrád tells a different story: a royal residence, not a merchant town. The first royal house here went up after 1325 under King Charles I, and his son Louis I enlarged it into a full palace later in the 14th century. What's visible today as ruins represents centuries of royal building on this one hilltop above the river.

Seeing both towns in a single private day makes sense precisely because the Danube Bend itself ties them together — a genuinely scenic stretch of river north of Budapest where the water curves sharply between forested hills, with Szentendre's artist-colony streets and Visegrád's hilltop ruins as two very different reasons to make the trip.
