Michael's Gate is the most obvious place to start in Bratislava's Old Town — at 51 meters, it's the last of the medieval city's original gate towers still standing, built in the 14th century and topped with an 18th-century Baroque helmet roof. A small museum inside its base displays historic armor and weapons, and the climb up its spiral staircase is rewarded with one of the better rooftop views over the Old Town and the Danube below.
Bratislava Castle, visible from almost everywhere in the city center, sits on ground the Romans used as a military outpost as far back as the 2nd century. The current castle complex was built up over centuries, from the 9th through the 18th, and underwent a major reconstruction between 1956 and 1964; it now houses the Slovak National Museum. On a clear day, its hilltop terrace looks out over the Danube toward Austria — and, on the clearest days, toward Hungary as well.
Grassalkovich Palace, built in 1760 as the summer residence of Count Anton Grassalkovich, now serves as the official seat of the President of Slovakia — sometimes called, only half-jokingly, "Slovakia's White House." The palace interior isn't open to visitors, but its French-style formal garden behind the building is a public park, a pleasant place to end a walk through the Old Town. As with Vienna, Slovakia is a Schengen country, so the border crossing from Hungary involves no passport check — just the drive itself, with a real lunch included along the way.
