Visegrád sits right at the Danube Bend, the dramatic point about 40 kilometers north of Budapest where the river swings sharply south through a gap in the hills. Its hilltop citadel was built up from the 1250s under King Béla IV, and by the 14th century, under the Angevin kings, Visegrád had briefly become the actual capital of the Kingdom of Hungary — the Hungarian royal crown itself was kept safe here between the 14th century and 1526. The castle was badly damaged during the long Ottoman occupation that followed and has stood in ruins, in various states of repair, ever since.
The surrounding countryside is part of the Danube-Ipoly National Park, created in 1997 out of two older protected areas, Pilis and Börzsöny, plus a stretch of the Ipoly River floodplain. It's one of Hungary's most ecologically varied parks, spanning everything from Danube-side lowlands to the forested Börzsöny hills, and is home to species including the Eurasian lynx and a slowly returning wolf population — habitat that makes the canoeing and cycling sections of this day feel genuinely rural, despite starting less than an hour outside the capital.
Margaret Island, the day's final stop back in Budapest, has a very different history — a Danube island that medieval religious orders settled as early as the 12th century, once known simply as the "Island of Rabbits." It was landscaped into an English-style park in the early 1800s and officially declared public parkland in 1908, and today its flat, car-free paths make it one of the easiest places in the city to end a long day of cycling.
