Heroes' Square is one of Budapest's most spacious, open public squares, built starting in 1896 to mark the thousandth anniversary of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin. Its centerpiece, the Millennium Monument, is a wide semicircular colonnade of historic Hungarian rulers and statesmen fronted by an open plaza — a layout with flat, even ground that makes it one of the more naturally wheelchair- and mobility-friendly monuments in the city, unlike many of Budapest's older, cobblestoned squares.
Buda Castle sits on top of Castle Hill, and getting up there has traditionally meant either steep cobbled lanes or the historic funicular railway that has carried visitors up the hillside since 1870 — neither of which is a reliable option for wheelchair users or anyone with limited mobility. A genuinely accessible alternative exists at Várkert Bazár, at the foot of the hill, where a free public elevator and escalator system climbs up to the castle grounds, and this tour is built to use that route rather than force a workaround at the top.
Beyond the route itself, the practical details matter just as much — a vehicle set up for wheelchair users, a pace that doesn't assume everyone in the group moves at the same speed, and a guide who already knows which specific entrances, restrooms, and pathways at each stop are genuinely step-free, rather than leaving your group to discover that on arrival.
