Bryce Canyon lies in Garfield County, Utah, which was founded on March 9, 1882 and named for President James A. Garfield, with Panguitch as its county seat. The county is one of the least densely populated in Utah, at about one resident per square mile, which helps explain why the surrounding country still feels so open.
A local guide can read the trails the way a neighbor would. Typical descents begin at rim trailheads around 8,000 feet, and a four-hour format leaves time for a loop among the hoodoos without rushing the climb back up.
