Bryce is not a true canyon at all but a series of natural amphitheaters carved into the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, which is why a naturalist's eye adds so much. Bryce Canyon sits at roughly 8,000 to 9,100 feet on the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, and its 35,835 acres hold the largest concentration of hoodoos anywhere on Earth.
Over a full day the rhythm usually shifts between rim viewpoints and short descents below it, with time to look at the pines and wildlife that make a living at this altitude. The Navajo Loop Trail, a popular short route from Sunset Point, drops about 520 vertical feet to the canyon floor and returns by a different path, passing landmarks such as Wall Street and Thor's Hammer, a roughly 25-foot pillar with a flat caprock.
