The Broken Group is an archipelago of more than 100 small islands, rock outcrops, and islets scattered through the middle of Barkley Sound, on Vancouver Island's west coast. It is protected as the Broken Islands Group Unit of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.
The islands are also a cultural landscape. The area holds significant Nuu-chah-nulth archaeological sites, and Benson Island, on the northwest corner of the group, is an important cultural site for the Tseshaht First Nation. Paddlers are visitors on that territory, and your guide can explain what is appropriate to see and where to stay respectful.
Because there are so many islets, paddlers can usually find sheltered water even when open Barkley Sound is breezy, though conditions still decide the route on the day.
