Trim Castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, was begun in 1172 - almost immediately after the first Anglo-Norman arrivals in the country - and expanded over the following decades by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter into the imposing stone fortress that still dominates the town today. Its scale made it a natural choice for Hollywood: the castle was used as a filming location for Braveheart.
Slane Castle, also on the route, is a different kind of historic site entirely - a genuinely still-inhabited estate rather than a ruin, standing in contrast to the passage-tomb sites elsewhere on the tour.
