Newgrange, the centerpiece of this half-day tour, was built around 3,200 BC - making it roughly 1,000 years older than Stonehenge and about 500 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza, an almost unbelievable fact to stand in front of in person. Its most famous feature isn't just its age: on the winter solstice, a narrow shaft above the entrance lets a beam of the rising sun travel down the passageway and strike the floor of the inner chamber, a feat of Neolithic engineering using nothing but stone tools.
The Hill of Tara, also covered on this tour, carries its own mythic weight as the traditional seat of the High Kings of Ireland - by the early Christian era, tradition holds that over 100 royal inaugurations took place there, and the site still holds a passage tomb, burial mounds, and the standing Lia Fail, believed to be the "Stone of Destiny" itself.
