About This Tour

Miners carved a small prayer space at Zipaquira as early as the 1930s, and a first underground church opened in 1954, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, patron saint of miners. Because it sat inside an active mine, structural and safety concerns led to its closure in 1990.
The cathedral you walk through today is a replacement built deeper in the mine, inaugurated on 16 December 1995. Sources put it roughly 180 to 200 meters underground, and it was formed largely by enlarging tunnels left by earlier mining. Zipaquira's salt itself was mined long before, with the Muisca working these deposits for centuries, which is why the town's colonial main square grew up around the trade.
