About This Tour
A private guide takes you to the Zipaquira Salt Cathedral and Lake Guatavita, the crater lake tied to the legend of El Dorado, with a traditional lunch included. This private day trip pairs Zipaquira's underground Salt Cathedral with Lake Guatavita, the real crater lake at the heart of the El Dorado legend — Muisca chiefs once ceremonially covered themselves in gold dust and offered treasures into the water here. Your guide explains the Muisca history and the legend's origins at the lake, in addition to the salt cathedral's own story.
Lake Guatavita sits in a high Andean crater setting and was a sacred site for the Muisca. The El Dorado story grew from accounts of a new chief's investiture, in which gold offerings were made to the lake. How elaborate the ceremony really was is debated, and the legend of a literal city or kingdom of gold is just that, a legend that Spanish treasure-hunters chased for generations.
Those efforts left real marks. In the 16th century and later, attempts were made to drain the lake to reach its supposed treasure, and a deep notch is still visible in the crater rim. Some gold artifacts have turned up over the centuries, but nothing like the legend promised. The Salt Cathedral stop adds a very different chapter: a church opened in 1995 inside a working mine's tunnels.
