Plaza de Bolivar is the old heart of the city, and Bogota itself traces its founding to 6 August 1538 by Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada. The Catedral Primada on the square is the city's main cathedral, the latest of several churches built on this site after earlier ones were damaged by earthquakes.
Monserrate rises above the old town at over 3,100 meters, and from the summit at night the city's lights spread across the high Andean savanna. The Muisca knew the hill before the Spanish built a sanctuary there in the 17th century, and the Fallen Lord shrine remains an active pilgrimage site.
