About This Tour
A private 4-hour walk through La Candelaria's landmarks, finishing with a hands-on coffee and cacao tasting workshop. This private walking tour explores La Candelaria's key landmarks — Plaza de Bolivar, Narino Palace, and the Church of San Agustin — before settling in at a local coffee shop for a real coffee and cacao workshop: traditional Colombian tinto, a pre-Hispanic cacao drink, cacao espresso, two coffees from different Colombian regions, the local specialty hot chocolate with cheese, and chocolate bonbons filled with exotic fruit.
Plaza de Bolivar has been the city's civic center since colonial times, and Narino Palace, the presidential residence just off the plaza, is named for Antonio Narino, an early independence figure who translated the Declaration of the Rights of Man into Spanish. The Church of San Agustin, begun in the 17th century, is one of the old quarter's quieter colonial churches.
Colombian coffee is grown in the highlands across the Andes, and the country's chocolate tradition is far older: cacao was used in pre-Hispanic drinks before the Spanish arrived. Hot chocolate served with a piece of cheese is a long-standing Bogota habit, especially in the cool, rainy afternoons the highland capital is known for.
