The garden is named for Jose Celestino Mutis, the Spanish botanist who led the Royal Botanical Expedition of New Granada beginning in 1783, a major scientific survey of the region's plants. The garden itself was founded in 1955 in his honor and is Colombia's largest botanical garden.
Its collections are arranged around ecosystems, from high-altitude paramo plants, including frailejones, to tropical and Andean forest species, with a conservation role beyond display.
