The Rock of Cashel carries genuinely deep history: traditionally held as the seat of the Kings of Munster as far back as the 4th or 5th century, it's also tied by legend to Saint Patrick himself, who is said to have baptized King Aenghus here in the 5th century. Cormac's Chapel, built between 1127 and 1134 for King Cormac Mac Carthaigh, shows a distinctly Germanic architectural influence - its twin towers are unlike anything else surviving in Ireland - and Brian Boru himself was crowned High King on this same rock in 978.
Cork City's English Market, established in 1788 and still a genuine working food market today, offers an hour or so of real browsing time among stalls selling Cork specialties, a welcome, lower-key contrast to the day's grander historic sites.
The day finishes at Blarney Castle, where kissing the Blarney Stone for the legendary 'gift of eloquence' is a tradition documented since at least the late 18th century - the stone itself was set into the castle tower back in 1446, but the kissing custom as we know it today is the later, popularly embraced legend, not a claim anyone takes literally.
