About This Tour

A deep dive into Bhutan's least-visited region — from the classic Paro-Thimphu-Punakha-Bumthang circuit onward to remote Mongar, Trashigang, and a Brokpa homestay in Sakteng. All 12 nights of this trip are spent inside Bhutan. It ends differently from our other Bhutan tours, though: eastern Bhutan has no international airport, so the final day is a drive to the border town of Samdrupjongkhar and an onward transfer to Guwahati Airport in India for your departure flight — that's a same-day road-and-airport transfer, not an overnight stay in India.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Arrival

Arrival pickup at Paro International Airport.

Day 1 — Paro arrival

Arrive at Paro International Airport and explore Paro Rinpung Dzong and Kichu Lhakhang.

Day 2 — Tiger's Nest hike

Hike to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery (3,120m) and explore the Paro valley.

Day 3 — Thimphu

Explore the capital, including the Buddha Dordenma statue and Tashichho Dzong.

Day 4 — Punakha

Drive via Dochula Pass, visit Chimmi Lhakhang, and tour Punakha Dzong fortress.

Day 5 — Bumthang

Drive through rural villages, stopping at the Trongsa Museum and Yatra textile center.

Day 6 — Bumthang sites

Day trip to either Kurje Lhakhang temple or Membertsho (the 'burning lake').

Day 7 — On to Mongar

Drive to Mongar through the wilderness of eastern Bhutan.

Day 8 — Trashigang

Travel via Gom Kora to Trashigang, known as the 'Jewel of the East.'

Day 9 — Into Sakteng

Drive on unpaved roads to the remote Sakteng valley.

Day 10 — Sakteng homestay

A homestay with the semi-nomadic Brokpa yak-herding community, with daily life and local meals.

Day 11 — Back to Trashigang

Return to Trashigang and visit Sherubtse College, Bhutan's first accredited college.

Day 12 — Samdrupjongkhar

Full-day drive to this southeastern border town, with a visit to its historic old cinema.

Day 13 — Departure via Guwahati

Morning drive across the border to Guwahati Airport, India, for your departure flight.

The trip ends with a drive to Samdrupjongkhar on the Bhutan-India border and an onward transfer to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, India, for your departure flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — all 12 nights are spent inside Bhutan. The only crossing is a same-day drive across the Bhutan-India border to reach Guwahati Airport on departure morning, since eastern Bhutan has no international airport of its own.

It sees far fewer visitors than the western circuit — the Sakteng homestay with the semi-nomadic Brokpa community (Days 9-10) is a genuinely different experience from the dzong-and-monastery pace of a classic Bhutan tour.

Expect long drive days and some unpaved, bumpy roads on the approach to Sakteng — this is a wilder, more remote itinerary than our western Bhutan tours.
