The Santiago Bernabéu wasn't always called that. Built between October 1944 and December 1947, it opened on December 14, 1947 as the Nuevo Estadio Chamartín, and only took on the name of club president Santiago Bernabéu eight years later, on January 4, 1955 — making the building itself nearly 80 years old, distinct from the far longer history of the club that plays in it.
That club's own story runs deeper still: Real Madrid was founded in 1902 as Madrid Football Club, with the honorific 'Real' (Royal) granted by King Alfonso XIII in 1920. It won the European Cup five years running, from 1956 to 1960, and FIFA named it the best football club of the entire 20th century in 2000 — the 'more than a century of history' a private guide here is actually walking you through.
The stadium itself looks almost nothing today like the one that opened in 1947. A major renovation running from 2019 to 2024, costing roughly €1.76 billion, added a retractable roof and an entirely new retractable playing surface, along with a rebuilt museum and expanded concourses — a transformation that brought its current seated capacity to around 83,186, a steep drop from the all-standing-and-terraced capacity of well over 100,000 the ground once held in earlier decades, reflecting modern stadium safety standards rather than a shrinking club.
