Learn about Berlin's street art culture through the years, including the emergence of new artists after the fall of the Berlin Wall, exploring the city's most bohemian neighborhoods.
Berlin's street art boom has a specific starting point: the fall of the Wall in 1989 left behind long stretches of exposed concrete, abandoned buildings, and a sudden absence of the strict controls East Germany had enforced over public space. Artists moved in almost immediately, and the East Side Gallery — 1.3 kilometers of the Wall painted by 106 artists from 21 countries in 1990 — became the most famous, but far from the only, result.
What followed was decades of legal murals, illegal tags, and everything in between, concentrated in neighborhoods like Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain where cheap rent and relaxed enforcement let the scene keep evolving rather than calcify into a museum piece. Your guide, on foot or by car depending on what you book, knows which pieces are genuinely significant and which are simply well-placed for photos.
The route moves through Berlin's most bohemian pockets, mixing famous, widely-photographed murals with smaller, lesser-known works tucked into courtyards and side streets — the kind of thing you'd likely walk straight past without someone pointing it out.
