Charlottenburg Palace began in 1695 as a summer residence Elector Friedrich III built for his wife, Sophie Charlotte, designed by architect Johann Arnold Nering on land she'd just been given along the Spree. After her death in 1705, both the palace and the surrounding village were renamed in her honor. It was expanded considerably over the following century, especially under Frederick the Great, and today stands as the largest surviving royal palace in Berlin.
Inside, the collections reflect that long royal history — arms, art, and insignia spanning generations of the Hohenzollern dynasty, the family that ruled Brandenburg-Prussia and, later, the German Empire, for more than five centuries.
With skip-the-line tickets and a private guide included across every option, from a focused Old Palace and Gardens visit to extended versions adding the New Wing, you can match the depth of the visit to how much Prussian history you actually want to take in.
