The Berlin Cathedral you'll walk into isn't medieval at all — the current building was constructed between 1894 and 1905 under Emperor Wilhelm II, designed by architect Julius Raschdorff in a grand Renaissance and Baroque Revival style, replacing a much simpler predecessor. It's the kind of scale and ambition the German Empire wanted on display at the turn of the 20th century.
Beneath it sits the Hohenzollern Crypt, one of the most important dynastic burial sites in Europe — roughly 94 sarcophagi and burial monuments spanning four centuries of Brandenburg-Prussian history, including Friedrich I and Sophie Charlotte, the same couple behind Charlottenburg Palace.
