About This Tour
Visit locations in Old Berlin that the majority of group tours miss, including Hackeschen Höfe, the former KPD Headquarters, and a 1920s ballroom. A private walking tour of the historic Scheunenviertel neighborhood, visiting Hackeschen Höfe, the site of the former KPD Headquarters, and a 1920s ballroom, with room to pause for photos and questions.
Hackesche Höfe, a connected complex of eight courtyards built between 1906 and 1907, was designed as the largest residential and commercial courtyard development in Germany at the time — a deliberately mixed-use project combining cultural space, offices, factories, and rental apartments in a single architectural concept. The first courtyard, with its striking Art Nouveau façade by August Endell, was reserved purely for cultural use.
The complex survived the war with only partial damage, but spent the DDR decades as neglected state property before a major restoration, starting in 1993, brought it back to something resembling its original character. Walking through today, it's easy to forget how close it came to simply falling apart.
The route also takes in the site of the former KPD (German Communist Party) headquarters and a surviving 1920s ballroom — genuine remnants of Weimar-era Berlin that most organized group tours simply don't have the time, or the specific local knowledge, to stop for.
