Created by real historian Nigel Dunkley, this private tour to Sachsenhausen offers in-depth commentary on the camp's unique design and role in World War II.
This tour's content was developed by Nigel Dunkley, a historian and former British military attaché based in Berlin, whose specific expertise lies in Sachsenhausen's unusual design and its dual legacy — both as a Nazi concentration camp from 1936 to 1945, and, less widely known, as a Soviet-run detention site in the years immediately after.
Following the camp's liberation in 1945, the site had a second, distinct chapter: the Soviet NKVD reopened it as 'Special Camp No. 7' (later renamed Special Camp No. 1), holding former Nazi officials and political prisoners until 1950. More than 60,000 people passed through during this period, with thousands dying from disease and starvation — a real, often-overlooked layer of the site's history.
Your guide's in-depth commentary covers the camp's cells, execution grounds, and former hospital building, drawing on Dunkley's specific research into how the site's physical design reflected its function under both regimes.
It's a more layered visit than a standard camp tour, treating Sachsenhausen as a site shaped by two very different, consecutive 20th-century systems rather than a single historical moment.
