Few sites on this tour look as ordinary as the one that may matter most: the spot where Hitler's bunker once stood is now an unmarked residential car park on Wilhelmstraße. East German authorities demolished what remained of the bunker in 1989 and deliberately left the site featureless, reasoning that an empty parking lot was less likely to become a shrine than a ruin. It wasn't until 2006 that a small information board was added nearby — the only acknowledgment, after sixty-plus years, that anything happened there at all.
The Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße tells a very different, far more visible story. This street was split in two by the Wall in 1961 — one side East, one side West — and some residents jumped from the windows of their own homes trying to reach the free side. The memorial, expanded in stages between 2008 and 2014, preserves one of the last intact sections of the Wall's full border system, along with the Chapel of Reconciliation, built on the site of a church the GDR demolished for security clearance in 1985.
From there, the walk connects the eras rather than treating them separately: the Brandenburg Gate, sealed off and inaccessible from 1961 until December 1989, and the Reichstag, burned in 1933 and rebuilt after reunification, both sit within a few blocks of each other — a reminder that Berlin's twentieth century didn't happen in neat, separate chapters.
