The Brandenburg Gate has worn almost every political meaning Germany has had to offer. Napoleon's army hauled off its crowning Quadriga statue as a war trophy in 1806; the Nazis staged parades beneath it in the 1930s; and after the Berlin Wall went up in 1961, the gate itself sat sealed off and inaccessible from either side for nearly three decades, inside the Cold War's no-man's-land, until it reopened in December 1989.
At the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, your guide can go beyond the 2,711 slabs above ground and into the underground Information Centre, which documents roughly three million individually identified Jewish victims through names, letters, and family photographs — a deliberate shift from abstraction to specifics.
Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous Allied crossing point of the Wall, is where the Cold War came closest to turning hot on Berlin soil: in October 1961, American and Soviet tanks faced off barely a hundred meters apart for more than 24 hours before both sides stood down. Today it's one of the city's busiest tourist spots, but the standoff underneath the souvenir stands was very real.
