The East Side Gallery is the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall still standing — roughly 1.3 kilometers of it, running along the Spree. In the spring of 1990, just months after the Wall opened, 118 artists from 21 countries painted the east-facing side (the side East Berliners had never been allowed near) with murals responding to the sudden political upheaval. It opened formally that September and has had protected memorial status since 1991, though weathering and vandalism mean most of what you see today are 2009 repaintings of the originals.
Museum Island, reached a short drive away, groups five museums — the Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Bode-Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, and Pergamon Museum — built between 1824 and 1930 into a single UNESCO World Heritage ensemble, recognized since 1999.
Along the way your chauffeur traces Unter den Linden, the grand boulevard — named for its lime trees — that has linked the old royal quarter to the Brandenburg Gate since the 17th century, before finishing at the Gate itself.
