Meissen, a small city on the Elbe about 25km northwest of Dresden, holds a genuinely significant place in European decorative arts: in 1710, it became home to Europe's first hard-paste porcelain factory, after chemist Johann Friedrich Böttger (building on earlier research by Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus) cracked the formula Europeans had been chasing for decades, financed by Saxon ruler Augustus the Strong.
Meissen porcelain went on to dominate European production for roughly the next 40 years, and the town's connection to that history is still visible in its historic center, which your guide walks you through before continuing on to Dresden.
Dresden itself, Saxony's capital, is known for its dense concentration of Baroque architecture — grand palaces, churches, and public buildings built under Augustus the Strong's own ambitious rebuilding campaigns in the 18th century, much of which survived or has since been carefully restored.
The itinerary stays flexible rather than locked to a fixed schedule, letting your guide adjust the balance between Meissen's porcelain heritage and Dresden's architecture and history based on what your group finds most engaging on the day.
