Dresden's Baroque old town looks remarkably intact today, but that appearance comes from decades of painstaking postwar reconstruction. In February 1945, Allied bombing raids destroyed much of the historic center in a single, devastating firebombing — the exact death toll is one of the most historically disputed figures of the war, with wartime Nazi propaganda inflating it as high as 200,000-500,000, while more recent, better-documented research (including a 2010 city-commissioned study) puts the real figure closer to 25,000.
The city's rebuilt Frauenkirche church is the most visible symbol of that recovery: left as rubble for decades under East German rule as a deliberate war memorial, it was finally reconstructed between 1994 and 2005, reusing roughly 3,800 original stones alongside new material, and was reconsecrated in October 2005.
Your personalized day trip also takes in Dresden's genuinely world-class art collections, including Raphael's 'Sistine Madonna' — one of the city's most celebrated paintings and a highlight for art lovers regardless of their interest in the city's wartime history.
An optional stop extends the day to Moritzburg Castle, a Baroque hunting lodge rising from an artificial lake just outside Dresden, built for Saxon ruler Augustus the Strong in the 18th century and later used as the real filming location for the beloved 1970s fairytale film 'Three Wishes for Cinderella.'
