The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, a short walk from the Brandenburg Gate, opened in May 2005 — 60 years after the war's end — after architect Peter Eisenman spent more than a decade on the design. Its 2,711 concrete stelae, ranging from knee-height to nearly five meters, cover almost two hectares with no single prescribed path through them; an underground information center names individual victims and families.
The Brandenburg Gate itself, completed in 1791, has outlived the Prussian kingdom that built it, survived Napoleon's theft of its Quadriga statue, and stood at the dividing line of the city during the Cold War — it sat just inside East Berlin, within the Wall's no-man's-land, for nearly three decades.
Beyond these two anchor points, your guide fills the rest of the route with whatever residential neighborhoods, courtyards, or local hangouts suit your group — the parts of Berlin a fixed-itinerary bus tour would never reach.
