About This Tour

A private, tailorable tour of Berlin's Cold War era, taking in sites connected to espionage, the Berlin Wall, and the East Side Gallery. The Glienicke Bridge, linking Berlin to Potsdam across the Havel, earned its nickname 'Bridge of Spies' the hard way: American and Soviet intelligence services used it to trade captured agents throughout the Cold War, starting with the exchange of Soviet spy Rudolf Abel for American U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers on 10 February 1962. Three more exchanges followed over the next 24 years, the last in 1986, involving nearly 40 people in total — and the bridge later inspired the Spielberg film of the same name.

The Wall itself went up overnight on 13 August 1961, eventually running some 155 kilometers around West Berlin before falling on 9 November 1989, after 28 years of division.

The East Side Gallery preserves roughly 1.3 kilometers of that same Wall, painted by 118 artists from 21 countries in the spring of 1990 and opened to the public that September — most of what's visible today are 2009 repaintings of the originals, since weather and vandalism took a real toll on the first versions. Your guide can shift emphasis toward any one of these threads depending on what your group wants to dig into.
