Kreuzberg's reputation as Berlin's edgiest neighborhood has real Cold War roots. The Berlin Wall boxed the district in on three sides, cutting it off from its old commercial ties to East Berlin and turning it into both a literal and economic dead end — which, paradoxically, is exactly what made it interesting. Rent-controlled, undervalued, and overlooked, Kreuzberg became one of the cheapest places to live in West Berlin for decades.
That combination of cheap housing and geographic isolation drew an unlikely mix of residents: Turkish immigrant workers arriving from the 1960s onward, alongside a growing scene of artists, musicians, and squatters occupying the district's many vacant, undervalued buildings. The club SO36, which opened on Oranienstraße in 1978, became genuinely internationally known — David Bowie and Iggy Pop both performed there during the years they lived in Berlin.
Your local host isn't reciting this from a script — these are personal stories and firsthand neighborhood knowledge, shared at whatever pace suits your group, plus their own honest recommendations for where to eat, drink, or explore next in Berlin.
