About This Tour
Enjoy personalized attention on a private walking tour to the Berlin Wall Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Brandenburg Gate, plus lesser-known locations. Learn about Berlin's long history, from its 13th-century origins as twin trading towns to the modern capital of unified Germany, visiting the Berlin Wall Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Brandenburg Gate.
Berlin's recorded history stretches back to the 13th century, when German merchant settlements on the Spree — Cölln, first mentioned in 1237, and Berlin itself, recorded by 1244 — grew up under the Margraviate of Brandenburg. Centuries later, the same stretch of river would sit at the center of a divided Cold War city.
The Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse preserves the only section of the Wall still standing in its full original depth — roughly 1.4 kilometers of former border strip, including the fences, lighting, and death strip exactly as they looked at the end of the 1980s — alongside a documentation center with an observation deck over the whole site.
Checkpoint Charlie, a short walk from there, takes its name from the NATO phonetic alphabet (it was the third Allied checkpoint into the city), and the Brandenburg Gate, completed in 1791, anchors the walk's final stretch — with your guide pointing out lesser-known corners of each neighborhood along the way.
