Potsdamer Platz looks like a glossy modern business district today, but for nearly 30 years it was something else entirely: a flattened no-man's-land. Bombed to ruins in 1943, split between occupying sectors after the war, and then bulldozed outright when the Berlin Wall went up in 1961, the square sat empty until reunification. Reconstruction began in 1994 and for years ranked as the largest building site in Europe — the glass-and-steel Sony Center, designed by Helmut Jahn, didn't open until 2000.
Your custom route can also take in Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 that groups five museums — the Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Bode-Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, and Pergamon Museum — built between 1824 and 1930 on a single island in the Spree.
Elsewhere on the itinerary, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, designed by architect Peter Eisenman and opened in 2005, uses 2,711 concrete slabs of varying height across nearly two hectares, with an underground information center telling individual victims' stories. Preserved stretches of the Berlin Wall and the Brandenburg Gate round out whichever mix your guide builds around your interests.
