The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, one of this Segway route's stops, opened in 2005 — sixty years after the end of WWII — after architect Peter Eisenman spent two years building 2,711 concrete stelae across a sloping 1.9-hectare site just south of the Brandenburg Gate. The varying heights and disorienting rows are deliberate: Eisenman designed the space to feel uneasy rather than simply solemn.
The Tiergarten, also on the route, has a far older history as royal hunting ground — it's the same destination the Great Elector's linden-tree boulevard, Unter den Linden, was originally built to reach back in 1647, long before it became the sprawling public park at the center of the city today.
