Understanding East Berlin means understanding what the Wall actually cut off, not just where it stood. For nearly three decades, the eastern half of the city operated under an entirely different political and economic system — the German Democratic Republic, or DDR — with its own architecture, its own surveillance apparatus, and its own version of what daily life was supposed to look like.
The East Side Gallery, a 1.3-kilometer stretch of the Wall along the Spree River, is where that era's ending is most visible today: in 1990, shortly after the border opened, 106 artists from 21 countries painted the eastern side of the Wall — the side East Berliners themselves had never been allowed to decorate while the border was sealed, since it faced the heavily guarded death strip.
Because this is a private, fully customizable half-day tour, your guide can weight the route however your group is most curious — more Cold War-era detail, more on the Nazi period that preceded it, or more time in the present-day neighborhoods that have grown up in the decades since reunification.
