The City Palace tells one of Berlin's stranger architectural stories: it was the Hohenzollern royal residence from 1443 to 1918, badly damaged in WWII bombing, then deliberately demolished by East German authorities in 1950 and replaced with the GDR's modernist Palace of the Republic. After reunification, the Bundestag voted in 2002 to rebuild it — reconstruction ran from 2013 to 2020, recreating architect Andreas Schlüter's original 1713 Baroque facades, and the building now houses the Humboldt Forum museum.
The walk also covers Unter den Linden, the lime-tree-lined boulevard linking the old royal quarter to the Brandenburg Gate (completed in 1791), and passes the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, whose 2,711 concrete stelae have stood since 2005.
