The route options on this ride capture two very different sides of Berlin. A quick Old Town loop takes in the Nikolaiviertel, rebuilt in the 1980s as part of East Germany's push to restore a 'medieval' core for Berlin's 750th anniversary in 1987 — part genuine reconstruction, part invention, using prefabricated concrete panels dressed up with historicizing facades. The longer East Side route instead runs past Karl-Marx-Allee, a 2.3-kilometer Socialist Classicist boulevard built between 1952 and 1960 under heavy Soviet architectural influence.
Seeing both on two wheels, with a private guide setting the pace, makes the contrast land in a way a single fixed itinerary wouldn't — Cold War East Berlin's competing ideas of monumental architecture, one looking backward to a reconstructed past, the other looking forward (at the time) to a socialist future.
Bikes also dodge the traffic and crowds that slow down bus and walking tours alike, so you genuinely cover more real ground in the same amount of time.
