About This Tour

Enjoy having a private guide so you can ask as many questions as you want while strolling between the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag building, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Gendarmenmarkt. A private walking tour covering the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag building, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Gendarmenmarkt, with your guide answering questions along the way.

Gendarmenmarkt, often called Berlin's most beautiful square, dates back to 1688 and takes its name from the Gens d'armes, a regiment of Huguenot soldiers garrisoned there in the 18th century. Its twin domes — the French Cathedral, built in 1705 for Huguenot refugees fleeing persecution in France, and the German Cathedral, completed in 1708 — flank the Konzerthaus, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1821. East Germany renamed the square Platz der Akademie in 1950; it got its historic name back only after reunification in 1991.

From there the walk heads toward two of the city's most recognizable landmarks: the Brandenburg Gate, completed in 1791, and the Reichstag, completed in 1894 and rebuilt with Norman Foster's glass dome between 1995 and 1999.

Checkpoint Charlie, the former Allied crossing point named via the NATO phonetic alphabet, rounds out the walk — your guide fields questions at every stop, so the pace stays conversational rather than rushed.
