About This Tour

Trade an inner tube for a sit-on-top kayak and paddle the Caves Branch River into the Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve with a private guide. A more active alternative to the standard cave-tubing route — you paddle yourself in a stable, hard-shelled sit-on-top kayak, with a private guide alongside for safety and history.

The Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve is a network of limestone caves surrounded by rainforest, about 30 minutes from Belmopan and an hour from San Ignacio. The Caves Branch River flows through parts of it, which is why both tubing and kayaking are possible here.

The Maya regarded caves as sacred entrances to Xibalba, the underworld, and used them for ritual. Broken pottery and other artifacts are still visible in places, so your guide will explain what to look at and what not to touch.

Kayaking gives more control than tubing because you paddle yourself, so it suits travellers who want to be active rather than float.
